Když v roce 1962 profesor Webber vyslechl v televizi projev prezidenta Kennedyho o kubánské krizi, rozhodl se uchýlit s těhotnou manželkou Helen do protiatomového krytu pod svým domem, který po léta budoval a vybavil vším potřebným. Když záhy otřese domem exploze, profesor v domnění, že jde o atomový útok, uzavře východ. Netuší, že výbuch byl způsoben havárií stíhačky, která se zřítila na jeho dům. V krytu, který připomíná dobře zařízený byt, se manželům narodí syn Adam, který zde s rodiči prožije harmonické a spokojené dětství. Když uplyne pětatřicet let, dveře krytu se automaticky otevřou. Otec se v ochranném obleku vydá na průzkum. Najde zchátralou čtvrť plnou špíny, bezdomovců a zděšeně se vrátí dolů v domnění, že svět je plný mutantů. Chce žít i nadále v krytu, jenže pak dostane záchvat a Helen pošle syna nahoru, aby opatřil zásoby na další roky v podzemí. Dobrácký Adam, který se ve svých pětatřiceti letech poprvé ocitá na denním světle, okouzleně prochází městem, až nakonec zabloudí. Pokusí se prodat sbírku baseballových kartiček, a když ho chce majitel obchodu podvést, zastane se ho prodavačka Eva. Šéf ji za to vyhodí, ale dívka odmítne mladíkovu vděčnost. Adamovi se nakonec podaří Evu přemluvit, aby mu pomohla nakoupit zásoby. Postupně se seznamuje se světem i jeho obyvateli...(TV Nova)
