Jeffries vchází cestou domů do místního krámku pro mléko a je vážně zraněn střelou z pistole. Vera vbíhá dovnitř, ale vraha už nevidí. Ukazuje se, že pachatel ještě předtím zastřelil majitele obchodu, zvaného Taťka. Vše nasvědčuje tomu, že jde o důsledek sporu mezi Taťkou a členy místního gangu, kteří po něm požadovali výpalné.
