Koronerka Julia Ogdenová má již mrtvol plné zuby, a proto se rozhodla „tnout do živého“. S podporou svého manžela Williama Murdocha (a tajnou záští asistentky Violet Hartové) se Julia stává vycházející hvězdou studia chirurgie. V dobově podmíněné atmosféře ale musí bojovat nejen s nevraživostí kolegů mužského oboru, ale také s šíleným vrahem, který řádí v renomované nemocnici primáře Forbese.
